Besançon, FR, 1970. Lives in Paris
Anne-James Chaton is a writer, artist and sound poet. His Portraits are based on the literal transcription of the content of everyday life documents such as bank statements, subway tickets, restaurant and shopping receipts, promotional flyers and customer loyalty cards belonging to the persons portrayed. Information such as times, places, names are assembled so as to build a repetitive sequence of words, numbers and symbols that resembles a litany, as meanings and identities make space for pure signifiers. This process may be seen as an attempt towards an objective portraiture as it draws on the collection of data and “poor literature” items in lieu of description or figuration.
